Novatech has long been involved in the incredible celebration of light that is Vivid Sydney and 2019 was no exception. Having been engaged by the Willoughby City Council to provide projection services for a key project onto the Chatswood Concourse, it was only natural that Novatech’s trusted disguise media servers were deployed to meet the task.
Held over five weeks at the start of Winter, Vivid Sydney has become known around the globe as destination event for those that are brave enough to head out on chilly Sydney evenings and enjoy the sights and sounds across the city. Having previously suspended a giant 30m LED screen vertically which acted as a giant green screen that transported people into the Great Barrier Reef to transforming heritage buildings at the University of Sydney into giant canvases of light, 2019 again bought the opportunity for Novatech’s projection mapping expertise to the test.
Novatech deployed a fleet of high powered Barco projectors across the L shaped aluminium clad building that was to be the centrepiece of the Willoughby City Council’s activation for Vivid. Using custom weatherproofed projection towers from Nexstage Rigging and Staging, the projectors were deployed across the site for an even distribution onto the large canvas. Then, Novatech’s long trusted media server of choice, disguise Pro 4×4 media servers were given the task of ensuring 100% reliable streaming of the beautiful content at pre-determined times across the 5 week event period.
Content was created by world leading projection mapping company, Limelight Projection Mapping out of Budapest. Limelight then led a projection mapping academy for students across the world to create content specifically for the Concourse building and Vivid Sydney 2019. Novatech were then privileged to provide the projection & media server capabilities to show this content to the thousands who attended the site of the five weeks. L-Acoustics innovative SYVA managed the task of high quality audio distributed throughout the immediate vicinity.
Novatech was an early adopter of disguise (formally known as d3) and was the first on the country to have a fully-fledged Pre-Visualisation suite at their Adelaide facility, something which is now becoming industry standard. Ashley Gabriel remarked “disguise has been the cornerstone of our innovation into projection mapping over the past decade. In what has now become the industry standard, Novatech are thrilled to have been a pioneer of the d3/disguise technology and deploy it across Australia on leading projection mapping projects”.
Ashley continued “We are thankful to the Willoughby City Council, Vivid Sydney via Destination NSW and Limelight to entrust Novatech with their content and project for the Chatswood Concourse. Thanks to the disguise media servers, we were able to maintain 100% “uptime” of images throughout the event which is no mean feat and is regarded as exceptional throughout the industry”.
